Overrated.

Agreed, Umnir, but you need to put it into context of the time it came out. I consider the initial Terran campaign to be brilliant.

I agree. And the zerg are much more interesting.
One of the biggest turndowns for me is the slow pace of the game.

It is quite slow compared to most RTS titles. A glaring example would be Warcraft II, its predecessor. In fact in my extensive experience of RTS games I can say that StarCraft is probably only quicker than WarCraft 1, Dune 2, the Age of Empires series and maybe Dark Colony.

If you're talking about the gameplay front, I could probably believe that as well, Umnir. Of course many StarCraft matches complete in less than fifteen minutes, but when one takes into consideration the time it takes to build secondary resource nodes, upgrade and train the highest tier units, it's amongst the longest wait times I've seen in a RTS.

I quite fancy StarCraft's pace, though. It's slow and methodical — just like my brain. It's not like Red Alert 3 where you roll around in your seat as your base in annihilated in a total of about 17 seconds, though that has its charms as well.

Unsurprising, seeing as in Red Alert 2 you can lose your entire base in 16.7 seconds (without lag factored in).

I enjoy those slowernmatches with stupid manoveurs, like setting your base into small island and operating from there... for the lulz.

If a match lasts 15 minutes that does not mean that the decisions that win or loose you a match are not the ones that you need to make in a split second. You constantly need to make split-second decisions to keep up with a good player. Doesn't matter if the match lasts for two hours.

The problem with games such as counter-strike and various fast paced strategy games is the predictablity or lack of fear in losing. There is often no punishment in losing, other than showing in your no-life stats (until you make new account).

A real commander ofcourse would approach slower, and amassing huge overpowering troops if anyhow possible to make minimal casualties. For instance, in games such as Total War series, it is always more favorable to make huge horde and siege cities until they die to starvation rather than making smallish group and sieging at first possible moment.

Same with 1st person wargames. The "feeling of being there" still doesn't work as well, because nobody is afraid of death. I have always wanted some sort of wargame that would need slow approach, crouched in long grass, taking advantage of trees and rocks, formations alike. Recon and minimizing casualties is optimal, and individualism is punished. But yes, everyone wants the stats and to be the hero, perhaps a microreflection of our individual based community and culture in modern days.

StarCraft 2!

I noticed some talk about the StarCraft1 gamespeed...

The base (normal) gamespeed of StarCraft2 is the equivalent of fastest speed in StarCraft1. It makes micromanagement harder but the games are very exciting now!

I've been heavily engaged in some Desert Strike for the MegaDrive and wow, it's hard. There's only four campaigns and they're not very long (longest one was 40 minutes so far), but damn, they make it hard. I'm on campaign three at the moment and everything's fine and dandy until I reach Mission 7 of 8, and then shit starts to hit the fan REAL quick. Consider the fact that in strike games, oil and amm crates come in limited quantities and it can do your head in like a crater.

But, that's why I love this game. it's short, but that's why they pack so much difficulty into it. That difficulty, however, is balanced. So far.

I'll post footage in the finished games thread once it's done. Then, it'll be off to the JUNGLE STRIKE!

I didn't notice that, I thought it was about the same.
